Alex Scott, Wigan Depot. Joined March 2024
My journey so far.
I applied and within a couple of days I was invited for an interview to be an apprentice bus driver. To my delight I passed the assessment and I was offered the job on the same day!
The training team stayed in touch in the lead up to my start date, which was reassuring. I arrived for my first day of training at Bolton Depot in March, with an induction all about my 13-month apprenticeship.
Driver training lasted about 3 weeks, I was also preparing for my theory test every day, which I passed on my first go. On the day of my driving test, I had one final 45-minute practice session. Weirdly, I felt relaxed and calm, and I was chuffed to pass first time!
Next it was all about route learning, there’s lots to take in, and they provide detailed descriptions and maps. I found it really helpful to make my own notes. I completed route learning in about 12 days and then I was ready to meet my mentor Paul. He was really helpful, he came out in service with me until I felt confident. I could ask him any questions about the ticket machines, bus stops, shift times… it was great to have his support!
I couldn’t believe it, I was then ready to go it alone. It was a bit daunting but I felt prepared. And there was no need to worry everything ran smoothly. Everyone is so supportive, which is so reassuring when you’re a new driver. I’m really enjoying bus driving, especially being with customers, and I plan to stick with it!
