Celebrating our 100th bus driver apprentice – meet Abey

Abey Rimmer. Bolton Depot. Joined March 2024

My journey so far.

My apprenticeship journey has been filled with wonderful experiences and proud moments that have brought tears to my eyes. I remember feeling a bit nervous during the online application process, worried that my lack of experience in the bus industry might hold me back. However, I was thrilled to be invited for an interview.

Once accepted, my training began. My driving instructors were incredibly supportive, guiding me patiently through each stage with excellent tuition. I felt nervous but fully prepared for the driving test, equipped with the tools and skills to ensure safety on the road. When I heard I’d passed the test it was a huge relief! I was so proud of how far I had come, and it confirmed my abilities (cue the tears of joy!). The next stage was route learning. My favorite route is the V1 route, which has played a significant role in helping me settle into my new role. Having a supportive team around me has made me very happy too.

I was mentored on the road by my ‘Buddy,’ Amanda. She was amazing and thorough, helping me handle everyday situations with her experience and offering valuable support and guidance. Even though I’m on the road now, I’m still learning every day and sometimes need guidance. Amanda is always there to help. I’ve always enjoyed working with the public, I find it rewarding helping people reach their destinations, and having a positive impact on their journeys. I feel very confident now, but I know there is much more to learn. Recently, I was honored to be awarded ‘Apprentice of the Month’ and selected to represent Go North West at The Apprenticeship Guide Awards at the Hilton in Manchester, where I met colleagues from other Go Ahead companies. I am very excited to continue my apprenticeship journey, taking on new challenges, and advancing my career within the transport industry.
